The Serenity Prayer

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

In whatever situation I can only change myself. This is the essence of the serenity prayer. I once heard I can only change my business, other people’s and God’s business is off limits. I love the simplicity of this prayer, yet it guides me for all my relationships.

I say this prayer…often. In early sobriety, I was told to recite this prayer to myself whenever I was feeling anxious, nervous, or uncomfortable. Some days I would have this on repeat so much it became somewhat meditative, releaving me of my worries.  Still today when I feel dis-ease my mind immediately turns towards the serenity prayer and starts to recite it to myself.
